Whether it’s exploring the mountains that surround the 145 kilometer waterway or getting your feet wet at a local beach there is so much to do near Walker’s Landing.
Surrounded in all directions by the great outdoors, there are hot springs, caves, beaches and tons of hiking trails from the novice to the experienced. The magnificent Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park is but a few minutes drive from the Balfour ferry landing.
Fishing, golfing, hiking, biking, skiing, sailing and power boating, kayaking and canoeing, beaches and camping, motorcycle and bike routes offer something for everyone and in every season. Fishing is superb in Kootenay Lake and even better in the winter.
Golfing
Golf courses in the area are outstanding with spectacular lake and mountain views and in the winter the fairways provide a fabulous Nordic ski experience.

There are four quality golf courses attracting novice and experts alike within an hour’s drive of Walker’s Landing.

Fishing/Boating
Over 145 kms long and up to 6 kms wide, Kootenay Lake is known the world over for its superb trout fishing. The lake’s record catch is a 35 lb. 12 oz. Gerrard rainbow trout. The Gerrard is indigenous to Kootenay Lake but has been transplanted all over the world. Dolly Varden, Kokanee and Whitefish are also plentiful in the lake. There are many fishing charters and tackle shops in the area.
The lake is large enough to accommodate all water sporting activities including kayaking, canoeing, sailing, waterskiing, house boating and power boating.
Skiing
The Nelson area is considered by many ski enthusiasts to have some of the best skiing and snowboarding conditions in North America. People come from all over the world to experience the deep powder snow that falls each winter. Also experience outstanding cross-country and mountaineering ski terrain.

Hiking/Biking
Among the east and west Kootenay’s greatest riches are the thousands of square kilometers of surrounding backcountry making it a haven for hiking and mountain biking.
Avid hikers will find easy access to many area parks and old logging roads that lead to a vast network of hiking trails and pristine alpine bowls. Clear streams, large inland lakes, forest-covered valleys and wildflowers make this area a hiker’s paradise.
Mountain biking trails offer everything from gentle railway grades to steep, technical tracks. From extreme to beginners, there is something for everyone.
